Desire Walks On
When Desire Walks On came out in 1993, a lot of arena rock, pop-metal and hair metal artists felt like the rug was being pulled out from under them. Alternative rock had become rock’s primary direction, and bands like Heart were being made to feel antiquated and pass

After Ann and Nancy had enjoyed huge success with their last three albums, ‘Heart’, ‘Bad Animals’, and ‘Brigade’, they came back with a solid rock effort that could live up to these previous smashes.

The big difference on Desire Walks on is the band. Longtime guitarist Howard Leese remains but bassist Mark Andes is no longer in the fold. And although drummer Denny Carmassi played on the record, he would not tour to support the album with Heart and subsequently left the band shortly thereafter.

Nevertheless, Ann and Nancy come out strong with the excellent opener ‘Black on Black II’ Nancy’s playing with the spirited triplets on her shredding guitar is very reminiscent of their classic ‘Barracuda’. ‘Back to Avalon’ provides a nice acoustic vibe and ‘In Walks the night’, although going into AOR range, its still a great number. The Mutt Lange penned ‘Will You Be There in the Morning’ showcases the Wilson’s vocal chemistry but is a bit too bubblegum for my taste. The title track is the best and is a great closer for the album.

A good effort by the Wilsons, but DWO misses the quality that ‘Brigade’ or ‘Bad Animals’ had.

After the full-blooded stadium rock of Heart, Bad Animals and Brigade, Bad Animals seems subdued by comparison, with smoother production, less hard-rocking bluster and subtler, less immediate songs. But don’t play this once and then forget it. Give it several listens, and the pleasures will begin to shine through - the nerve-tingling solo in ‘My Crazy Head’, the sinister intro to ‘Rage’, the awesome Ann Wilson vocal on ‘In Walks The Night’ and the jubilant ‘Back To Avalon’. Having said that, the cover of Dylan’s ‘Ring Them Bells’, the lethargic-sounding ‘The Woman In Me’ and the two foreign language tracks at the end are pure filler. Not their best, but it’ll still improve your life.

Desire Walks On is an outstanding piece of work. Begining to end, it’s driven by strong music and powerful vocals. Ann delivers an uncanny performance on In Walks the Night (seeing it live is way cool). My Crazy Head, and Voo Doo Doll are among the many highlights of this album, which only proved the bands commitment to quality was as strong as ever.
