“In the beggining God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth BECAME formless, empty and dark.”?
What made the earth that way after God created it?
Some of us believe that it became formless and empty because of the war in heaven between Lucifer and his angels (who afterwards became Satan and the demons) and God’s angels led by Michael. As such, the Genesis account of days one thru 6 are actually a recreation or renewing of the face of the earth after the destruction of this terrible war.

“The earth was without form”, not “became formless”.

Originally the earth was a glowing molten mass. As it began to cool it became dark, but was empty of any surface features. It is still cooling today.

this was revealed in the seventh century,
the following is how the big bang happened:
“Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: ‘Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.’ They said: ‘We do come (together), in willing obedience.’ So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge. (The Noble Quran, 41:11-12)”
“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe? (The Noble Quran, 21:30)”
The universe is also expanding!!!
“And the firmament, We constructed with power and skill and verily We are expanding it. (The Noble Quran, 51:47)”
The “Cosmic Crunch” Theory was also mentioned in the Noble Quran 1440 years ago!!
“The Day that We roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books (completed),- even as We produced the first creation, so shall We produce a new one: a promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfil it. (The Noble Quran, 21:104)”

IF you think thats crazy, it said god walks on the water on first day of creation but water cant exist without the sun. Sun and every stars was created on the 4th day and all appeared in the night sky after the 6th. Technically that is impossible because the light coming from the stars travel at light years. Some stars are like billions of light years away.
Earth would not have many shining stars at night if the world was indeed created in 6000-10000 years.

Read it. It explains everything. It does not say "now the earth became formless, empty and dark" either. It says: "Now the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:1-2).
It means that God made the planet, and it was at first formless, empty of life and dark. There was no light. Get it? Look at all the planets. They're all spherical. You think that's a coincidence? People say it's gravity that makes all the planets spherical. However, if that's true, then why does the Moon have less gravity, and it's spherical, too?
Now scientists are referring to what is called "the God particle." This is also known as Dark Matter. They say we can either believe in invisible matter that's all theoretical–which holds everything together–or you can open your Bible, and see that God holds it all together. It's up to you.
Last, you either go by the theories of man and your own reasoning, or you put your faith in a Holy God. Faith and Reason do not mix. The wise man says: "I know nothing."

i'm taking hebrew right now and know that isn't the proper translation. it says "the land WAS formless and void." (transliteration: ve ha aretz hiyata tohu vavohu) darkness comes into play in the next phrase
note that the word "aretz" most often refers to land and not earth as we would think of it (the globe).

God, being a fiction, had nothing to do with it; the Genesis tale (as is most of the bible) is strictly fiction. The earth, once formed, was not dark; the sun predates it by 2.5 million years (4568.5 million years as opposed to 4566 million years).

Jakes wife - how could there be days before there was a sun? A day is measured from sunrise to sunrise, or sunset to sunset, or some other solar period, when you’re living in a time before the concept of “hour” existed.
The sun didn’t exist until the 3rd day - and the god who created the universe believed that? Only very primitive people believe that the reason the sun rises is because the sky begins to get light. (And the bicameral brain fully explains how people can “hear” a “god” “speaking” to them.)
