Has anyone known or heard of a dog being allergic to fish oil?

I started my dog on a fish oil supplement (1000mg - my dog weighs about 19 lbs) about a week ago and started noticing yesterday that he is itching and a little red-looking on his belly/underarms and around his eyes. It may be some other allergy (has allergy to fleas but he's on Advantage) in which case we're going to the vet but I wondered if anyone has heard of this. He doesn't like to eat fish. Thanks, dog lovers, for your help!

YES!
my capone, and his 2 pups are allergic to fish oil.
It makes them itch, and turns their skin very red.

so, it's salmon oil/vit e for the other dogs, and flax seed oil/vit e for the allergic dogs.

ADD: Fish is not bad for dogs. My others, as do many raw fed dogs across the world eat fish on a regular basis.
In summer, my dogs get raw fish heads weekly(i don't give fish oil then).

It does not make their hair fall out, unless they are allergic to it.

not all dogs are allergic to fish.

I heard dogs hair fall off when they eat fish, that's why I don't feed my dog fish products.

I have not heard of it.. but it is possible.

Try eliminating the fish oil from his diet and see if the itching and redness clears up.

I think its a no brainer to stop the fish oil. Allergies are very hard to diagnose in dogs because there are no blood or skin tests to narrow it down. Could be a food or environmental allergy like pollen or insecticides.

Sure…they can have any allergy we can have….mine's a pug and she has respiratory allergies from many sources and a couple of months ago we had quite a problem from bilateral otitis thereof….Our vet told us to put her on human Benedryl by mouth 25mg. every day for the rest of her life….if that helps….your own vet may recommend something else….good luck♥

my dogs take Omega3 daily with no problem just nice healthy shinny coats. it is spring and things are blooming so it could be allergies from something outside.

have you used anything different in the house such as powered carpet deodorizer, washed dogs bedding in different detergent, used new spray deodorizer. this is just a few things i can think of. hope this helps

Yes, it is possible! I not only know this because I work for a veterinarian but I also have a dog who is allergic to fish. When my dog was About 10 months old I noticed that the hair loss was not just her going through the normal Pomeranian 'uglies". She constantly rubbed her face on the carpet and chewed her feet. We finally had her allergy tested and come to find out she was allergic to wheat, corn, chicken, and fish along with a lot of outdoor plants and grasses. I always say when in doubt check with your veterinarian. I was able to start her on a supplement called Dinovite and she is doing great! I like it because it is an alternative to her always being shot up with cortisone injections and we haven't had an itching problem for about a year now.

I have given Salmon Oil to my dogs with no ill effects.

I do think, however, that 1000mg is rather a lot for a 19 lbs, dog. I only give my 70 lb. Goldens 500g. per day.

I cannot see anything wrong with giving fish to dogs. A lot of dog food is made with fish and potato especially for dogs suffering from allergies because it is completely Gluten free.
There is a company called Fish4U which sells dried salmon skins and small dried fish treats and they seem to be very popular.

Vets will recommend a bland diet of fish and rice for dogs who have had upset stomachs.

I'd be surprised if your dog was allergic to the fish oil but I would question the amount you are giving him. It could be a little too rich and cause him to overheat, hence the rash on his body.

Have a word with your Vet on the phone and get his professional opinion on this.
