What are the best brands of Fish Oil pills to use?

My doc recently recommended that I start taking Fish Oil pills, but when I went to the store, there were so many different brands to choose from. A friend of mine said to make sure the pills are enteric coated and do not just get the cheap brand. So can someone please tell me what brands to use that are in the mid-level price range?

Enetric coated means that the pills are coated with a substance that does not allow the pill to break down in your stomach, but instead breaking down in your small intestine (due to the differances in pH in the stomach vs. you SI). This not only negates the fishy after taste issue, but promotes absorption of a higher amount of the pills contents into your body (the small intestine sends the broken down chemicals to your liver for metabolism).

Fish Oil supplements useless for decreasing chances of heart disease?

I just saw on CNN this morning a cardiologist saying that fish oil supplements are basically useless, that only the actual food source provides the benefits of decreasing stroke and heart disease? Is this so?
I always understood that the omega-3 fatty acids are what provide these benefits, which are included in both the fish oils supplements and obviously the fish themselves….

I think they are somehow right because in the actual food you find different mineral and organic complexes that can't be obtained during chemical reactions in pharma. laboratories.
omega 3 fatty acid can't be bad for your health but it's better to eat the whole complex of vitamins, lipids, proteins, etc.

Has anyone known or heard of a dog being allergic to fish oil?

I started my dog on a fish oil supplement (1000mg - my dog weighs about 19 lbs) about a week ago and started noticing yesterday that he is itching and a little red-looking on his belly/underarms and around his eyes. It may be some other allergy (has allergy to fleas but he's on Advantage) in which case we're going to the vet but I wondered if anyone has heard of this. He doesn't like to eat fish. Thanks, dog lovers, for your help!

YES!
my capone, and his 2 pups are allergic to fish oil.
It makes them itch, and turns their skin very red.

so, it's salmon oil/vit e for the other dogs, and flax seed oil/vit e for the allergic dogs.

ADD: Fish is not bad for dogs. My others, as do many raw fed dogs across the world eat fish on a regular basis.
In summer, my dogs get raw fish heads weekly(i don't give fish oil then).

It does not make their hair fall out, unless they are allergic to it.

not all dogs are allergic to fish.

What has been your experience with fish oil supplements?

My doctor has suggested I start taking fish oil supplements - she specifically recommended the Nordic Naturals brand.
Do they taste fishy? Maybe a silly question, I know. Have you found that they've helped? My problem has to do with elevated liver enzymesl.

Fish oil is a natural safe and very potent anti inflammatory. If you have pain, it very well is caused by inflammation and fish oil will block it. My chronic low back pain and my bleeding gums all got better after I started fish oil….minimum dose is 1200 mg EPA and 600 mg DHA forget for the moment the amount of "fish oil" in the dose. keeps platelets from clumping thus lowering risk of stroke and heart attack. and good for "heart disease" in general. and new research shows that fish oil is marvelous against depression and other brain issues. I use Rx Omega-3 from Natural Factors and there is no fish burp.

Does taking fish oil vitamins really make a difference?

I have been taking fish oil for several months now. I have been told by my doc it can be very beneficial. But after taking it it tastes fishy. Not my favorite taste for the morning. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yea!
I took them for about a week and I didnt notice a difference, so I stopped because I didnt think it was worth the taste.
It like slips and slides down your throat.
Ewh!
