what is the recomended exercise for a 75 year old woman?

My mom is 75 years old , she is healthy and willing to exercise, what kind of exercise and how long should she be doing it?

It really depends on what kind of shape she is in. She should start out with some water aerobics, join a class at the local pool. She could also go for a walk in the mornings. She should walk at a pace she feels comfortable with and go for as long as she feels she can.

What's a good way to exercise my dog indoors during cold or wet weather?

I live in a cold climate, and in winter my small dog puts on weight because she isn't getting exercised enough.

It's easy for me to exercise indoors in the gym or by putting on an exercise DVD, but how can I encourage her to maintain fitness indoors?

I have plenty of indoor games for my dogs…and we are in an apartment with two 70 lb. dogs!

I play fetch by throwing a tennis ball down the hallway or bouncing it off the wall (I have very nice neighbors.)

We play hide and seek. My husband keeps them in one room, while I go hide, then he releases them and tells them to find me.

We play follow the leader (actually my husband likes this game more than me,) where he basically just walks around and around the apartment and the dogs follow him.

And tug of war.

What exercise is effective at lifting depression and how often should you do it?

I have decided to stop taking St Johns Wort now so I can go back on the pill as my hormones make my depression worse however I am feeling the effects of not taking this. I already take fish oil but I understand exercise can be as effective as an anti-depressant and wondered what experiences other people had. Serious answers only please.

Exercise is only one step in getting depression under control (note I wrote control and not get rid of; people almost always have residual depression but it is controlled). The first and most important thing is doctor prescribed meds; those have saved more lives inflicted by depression than "natural" alternatives. The second thing is talk therapy. While depression is usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, there are almost always reasons that the depression manifested itself. Talk therapy helps you get at the root of the depression and helps you work with the behavioral manifestations that come with depression (cutting yourself off from others, seeing things negatively, etc). The third thing is exercise, but exercise in a gym or on a exercise bike at home is not as healthy as walking or doing things in the fresh air. Gym work and exercise bikes keep you in one place where your mind can return to dwelling on your feelings. Being out in the fresh air walking, running, swimming, etc releases your mind from the concentration on the depression.

What is the best weight lifting exercise for baseball?

If I could just do one exercise for hitting, what would it be?
Also, If I could just do one exercise for throwing, what would it be?

Benchpress is pretty good because it builds chest muscles. If you want to pitch, you can’t bulk up too much or you lose flexibility which affects velocity and control

How do I know how much exercise I am getting?

I'm such a perfectionist sometimes. I freak out because I can't measure how much exercise I do, how many calories I burn and such when I do certain activities, like cleaning my home or walking or such. How am I supposed to know how much I'm supposed to eat (with the additional amount I need when I exercise), if I can't measure the amount of exercise I am doing? How can I lose weight sucessfully? This is really exasperating me.

If you are this concerned with your body, I would suggest that you see a physical trainer. A physical trainer has the ability to calculate the amount of calories your body burns with very little physical activity. With this figure you can figure how much calories you need to decrease from you daily intake. The average figure is apprx 500 calories to cut back. You also should differentiate the calories that are coming from: protein, fats, and carbohydrates. This way you can proportionate your food intake. I would also suggest that you do some research on foods and dieting if you have not done so already. Well good luck.

How can I be motivated to exercise despite depression?

I have depression, and I find that as much as I want to exercise and lose weight, I am having a difficult time getting motivated due to my depression. Exercise does help me feel better and help with my depression, but does anyone have any tips on getting motivated in the beginning and continuing an exercise routine even when feeling discouraged?

It's a bit of a double whammy isn't it; you exercise and you'll feel better, but if you are depressed you aren't motivated to do anything!

Well, the best suggestion is to push yourself right out the door. You do have the choice and simply force yourself to put on your shoes and go. That's what I do, the worse I feel, the more I know I have to push myself. Also, enlist a friend or relative to help you, someone to be your walking buddy.

How do you exercise without gaining muscle?

I want to exercise (to lose weight) and I gained muscle from running too much. What other ways can I exercise to just lose weight, without gaining muscle?

My question would be how do you know you gained muscle? Running all the time can result in worse metabolism while running, which means you'll be gaining a little weight at a time if you're always running the same speed/distance…

As for your question, it's not possible. Jogging brings lean muscle tissue, so I'd say do that. I would actually lift weights every three days or so. You won't really gain weight as much as convert your fat weight into muscle weight. Your body is built to adapt to its surroundings. There are no exceptions.

How do you make yourself exercise everyday no matter how tired you are?

I just hed my third child and i want to loose a few pounds about 10 or 15. I am a stay @ home mom so i have plenty of time to exercise. How do you make yourself exercise every day?? I will do it one day and skip a few. Im always tired. Help!

I know how you feel! I tape pictures of me at my goal weight on the dresser drawer that holds my “lounging” clothes lol so that when I go to get them… I think about how cute I used to look, how healthy I was and how good I felt… and then I’m usually inspired to throw on my work out clothes instead.
….
THAT does not always work… I also taped pictures of me now to the fridge and snack cabinet so I don’t eat all day…because thats how I got where i am in the first place!
Sometimes I have to THROW myself the kids and the stroller in the car and just GO. We go to the park, or to the mall and just walk walk walk walk until either I get tired or the kids get cranky. I have a 20 month old and a 6 month old!
