ABSTRACT
This presentation is about a potential shortcut to artificial intelligence by trading mind-design for world-design using artificial evolution. Evolutionary algorithms are a pump for turning CPU cycles into brain designs. With exponentially increasing CPU cycles while our understanding of intelligence is almost a flat-line, the evolutionary route to AI is a centerpiece of most Kurzweilian singularity scenarios. This talk introduces the Polyworld artificial life simulator as well as results from our ongoing attempt to evolve artificial intelligence and further the Singularity.
Polyworld is the brain child of Apple Computer Distinguished Scientist Larry Yaeger, who remains the primary developer of Polyworld:

Speaker: Virgil Griffith
Virgil Griffith is a first year graduate student in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology. On weekdays he studies evolution, computational neuroscience, and artificial life. He did computer security work until his first year of university when his work got him sued for sedition and espionage. He then decided that security was probably not safest field to be in and he turned his life to science.

How Evolution Works the GAME. A must see!!!
KevinPluck has turned this simulation into an interactive game. You are the predator and the squares evolve to avoid you eating them.

The world is full of misinformation.
Interesting how most of the Young Earth Creationists and people pushing Intelligent Design, clearly don’t have an education in the biological sciences. Evolution is the product of Natural Selection AND Mutation. Either alone does nothing.
Evolution is the logical outcome of the world around us. Organisms that store their genetic information in DNA are guaranteed to have mutations. Mutations produce NEW variation. Reproducing organisms are guaranteed to compete for resources. Competition between variable organisms leads to natural selection, i.e. those organisms that possess variation that gives then an advantage will out compete those who don’t. Organisms with deleterious variation will lose to all other organisms. In this way the ENVIRONMENT SELECTS the best organisms. This has the effect of passing beneficial mutations on to the next generation and removing deleterious ones. Over time natural selection will lead to a net shift in the genome of the population, i.e. evolution.
Yes, this really is evolution. Changes in allele frequency, changes in gene expression, and changes in transcription factor binding efficiency, they are all evolution.
Logic predicts evolution, and observation confirms it. Evolution has been observed in the lab and in nature. Speciation (macroevolution) has been observed in the lab and in nature. Large changes in appearance have been observed in the lab and in nature. Beneficial mutations have been observed in the lab and in nature.
CORRECTION: Some have noted that Evolution need not include Natural Selection, as genetic drift does result in evolution. I agree that genetic drift is evolution, and should stress that Natural Selection is just one mechanism for evolution.
Natural Selection + Random Mutation = Evolution
Genetic Drift + Random Mutation = Evolution
Both are true.
To see an example of how genetic drift can lead to a speciation event, i.e. macroevolution, check out an old video of mine

To deny evolution is to deny direct observation. It is as silly as denying that the sky is blue.

“I’m a head. I’m a man / I’m the first mammal to wear pants / I am at peace with my / I can kill cause in god I trust / It’s evolution baby.”

Gloria Estefan’s influence on the American pop music scene should not be underestimated; a Cuban-American, she was one of the first Latin artists to crossover to mainstream American success. With her native Latin rhythms and catchy pop sensibility, Estefan and her Miami Sound Machine topped the charts and gained international stardom. This hove video captures some of her greatest hits in music video form, including “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” and “Get On Your Feet.”

This animated series goes to the roots of the classic comic book X-MEN, capturing the mutants in their youth. Much like the WB series SMALLVILLE, the teens who would become the heroes and villains of a comic book world are all attending the same high school, creating a mixed student body with otherworldly conflicts that go beyond the typical high school hijinx. This collection includes episodes 10-13 of the series. Included is the wild two-part episode “The Cauldron” pitting mutants against each other in a bout for supremacy. Additional episodes are “Shadowed Past” and “Grim Reminder.”

For 525 years, adventures and archeologists have studied the Mayan civilization for clues about their calander system. Due to the translation of Mayan writing, discoveries of calendar inscriptions at Mayan ruins and the availability of scientific facts about Earth history, we now have the answer to the Mayan calendar mystery. Ian Xel Lungold, presents scientific evedence that demonstrate the Maya centered their civilization around the actual schedule of the evolution of consciousness and the unfolding of creation; galaxies, life and history, in a system of repeating, ever accelerating cycles. Now we have the pattern of all Creation and it’s called the Mayan Calendar.

Devo were a seminal new wave band who, thanks to heavy rotation for their “Whip It” video on MTV, almost crept into the national consciousness in the 1980s. Their quirky, poly-rhythmic tunes always had a strong pop edge to them, and their wacky videos won them plenty of plaudits from fans and critics alike. Band leader Mark Mothersbaugh has subsequently carved out quite a career for himself scoring movie soundtracks, contributing scores for an eclectic array of films and television shows, including RUGRATS and RUSHMORE. This comprehensive retrospective on their video work offers the definitive word on the dada-ist rockers, featuring various extras, and videos for “Whip It,” “Love Without Anger,” “Disco Dancer,” and “Worried Man” amongst many others.
